Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, but that doesn’t make them any less concerning for many of us. As we age, our skin undergoes several changes that lead to the formation of these lines, often appearing first around the eyes, mouth, and forehead. Understanding why they happen and how we can address them is key to maintaining youthful, healthy-looking skin.

Why do I have fine lines & wrinkles?

Fine lines and wrinkles develop primarily due to a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors:

Aging: As we age, the production of collagen and elastin in our skin decreases. These proteins are essential for maintaining the skin's firmness and elasticity. When their levels drop, the skin becomes thinner, drier, and less resilient, leading to the formation of lines and wrinkles.

Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun are a major contributor to skin aging - especially in sunny Hawke's Bay. Prolonged exposure to UV light breaks down collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, accelerating the appearance of wrinkles. This process, known as photoaging, often results in deeper, more pronounced wrinkles.

Facial Expressions: Repeated facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning, or squinting, can cause fine lines to develop over time. The muscles beneath the skin contract with each expression, and eventually, these repetitive movements can lead to permanent lines and wrinkles.

Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, poor diet, stress, and lack of sleep can all contribute to premature skin aging. Smoking, for example, reduces blood flow to the skin, depriving it of oxygen and essential nutrients, which speeds up the wrinkling process.

Genetics: Your genetic makeup plays a role in how and when wrinkles appear. Some people are naturally predisposed to develop wrinkles earlier or more prominently than others due to their genetic background.

Treatments available

While fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of aging, there are numerous ways you can minimise their appearance and rejuvenate the skin.

Xeomin® is an injectable treatment that naturally softens the muscles that cause wrinkles, particularly around the forehead, eyes, and mouth. This results in a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Dermal Fillers is an injectable treatment that plumps up the skin, filling in fine lines and wrinkles, and restoring lost volume to the face.

Microneedling involves tiny needles that create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body's natural healing process and boosting collagen production. This can help reduce the appearance of fine lines over time.
