Skin Laxity

Skin laxity refers to the loosening or sagging of the skin, often due to the natural aging process or other factors.

As we age, the skin loses its firmness and elasticity, leading to a more relaxed, less toned appearance. Skin laxity can occur on various parts of the body, including the face, neck, arms, abdomen, and thighs, affecting both men and women.

Why does Skin Laxity occurs?

Several factors contribute to the development of skin laxity, including:

Aging: As we age, the production of collagen and elastin in our skin decreases, leading to thinner, less resilient skin that is prone to sagging. The natural loss of fat volume in the face and other areas can result in a hollowed, less plump. Lastly, the decrease of hyaluronic acid leads to dryness and a loss of firmness.

Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun are a major contributor to skin aging - especially in sunny Hawke's Bay. Prolonged exposure to UV light breaks down collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, accelerating the aging process and causing premature skin laxity. This is often referred to as photoaging.

Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, poor nutrition and rapid weightloss can all  contribute to the development of skin laxity. For example, smoking can cause collagen breakdown and loss of elasticity. Poor nutritoon and rapid weight loss can make the skin more prone to sagging.

Hormonal Changes: Hormonal changes during menopause, particularly the decline in estrogen, can lead to a reduction in collagen production, causing the skin to lose its firmness. During pregancy, the skin stretches to accommodate the growing baby, and after childbirth, the skin may not fully retract, leading to loose skin, particularly in the abdominal area.

Genetics: YGenetic factors play a significant role in determining the rate at which your skin ages. If your parents experienced early skin laxity, you might be more prone to it as well.
