Hair Loss

Hair loss, medically known as alopecia, is the gradual or sudden thinning, shedding, or complete loss of hair from the scalp or other parts of the body. It can affect both men and women and may vary in pattern, severity, and duration. While hair loss is often associated with aging, it can occur at any age and can have a significant impact on an individual’s self-esteem and confidence.

Why does hair loss occur?

Hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, including

Genetics: Commonly known as male or female pattern baldness, androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss. It is hereditary and linked to the androgen hormone, which can shrink hair follicles over time, leading to thinning and eventual hair loss. In men, this typically manifests as a receding hairline and bald spots, while women may experience diffuse thinning across the scalp.

Hormonal Changes: During menopause, hormonal fluctuations, particularly a decrease in estrogen, can lead to thinning hair. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and after childbirth can cause temporary hair loss, known as telogen effluvium, which usually resolves within a few months.

Medical Conditions: There are some conditions that can cause hairloss such as Alopecia Areata (autoimmune disorder causes the immune system to attack hair follicles) and Fungal infections such as ringworms. Diabetes and Lupus can lead to hair loss as a secondary symptom.

Medications: Some medical treatments such as Chemotherapy, beta blockers for blood pressure, and some antidepressants can also contribute to hair loss.

Nutritional Deficiencies: Low levels of iron, particularly in women, can lead to hair loss, as iron is essential for hair growth. As well as insufficient vitamin D can affect hair follicle health and lead to thinning hair.

Stress: High levels of stress, whether physical or emotional, can trigger telogen effluvium, a temporary hair loss condition where a large number of hair follicles enter the resting phase simultaneously.

Hair Care Practices: Hairstyles that pull tightly on the hair, such as ponytails, braids, or buns, can cause traction alopecia and frequent use of heat styling tools, chemical relaxers, and dyes can weaken the hair shaft, leading to breakage and hair loss.

Treatments available

Hair loss can be distressing, but with the right approach, it is often manageable and even reversible.

Exosomes awaken dormant hair follicles, transitioning them to the growth phase, and even generating new hair follicles

Topical Treatments these may include corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune response in cases like alopecia areata.

Lifestyle and Nutritional Adjustments: Supplements such as biotin, iron, and vitamin D can support hair health and potentially reduce hair loss due to nutritional deficiencies. And stress management techniques such as meditation, exercise, and adequate sleep can help manage stress levels and reduce the risk of stress-related hair loss.
