Stretch marks
Stretch marks, medically known as striae, are long, narrow streaks or lines that develop on the skin when it is rapidly stretched. They often appear as red, purple, or silvery-white lines and can occur on various parts of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts, and arms. While they are not harmful and are purely a cosmetic concern, many people seek treatments to reduce their appearance.
Why do I have stretch marks?
Stretch marks can develop due to several factors, including:

Rapid Weight Gain or Loss: When the skin is stretched quickly due to significant weight gain, it can cause the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin to break, leading to stretch marks. Similarly, rapid weight loss can also lead to their formation as the skin shrinks back.
Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the skin around the abdomen and breasts stretches significantly to accommodate the growing baby. This rapid stretching is a common cause of stretch marks, particularly in the third trimester when the most growth occurs.

Growth Spurts: Adolescents going through puberty often experience rapid growth spurts, which can cause the skin to stretch quickly and result in stretch marks, especially on the thighs, hips, and back.
Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, and periods of rapid weight change, can weaken the skin’s structure, making it more susceptible to stretch marks.
Genetics: A family history of stretch marks can increase your likelihood of developing them. Genetic factors influence the skin’s elasticity and how it responds to stretching.

Corticosteroid Use: Long-term use of corticosteroid creams, lotions, or pills can decrease the skin’s collagen levels, reducing its elasticity and making it more prone to stretch marks.

Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as Cushing's syndrome or Marfan syndrome, can cause stretch marks due to hormonal imbalances or abnormalities in connective tissue.
