Pigmentation
This refers to the coloring of the skin caused by melanin, a natural pigment produced by cells called melanocytes. While melanin is responsible for the natural color of your skin, hair, and eyes, irregularities in its production or distribution can lead to various pigmentation disorders.
These can manifest as dark spots, patches, or uneven skin tone, which can affect your overall appearance.
Why do I have pigmentation?
Pigmentation issues can arise from several factors, including:

Sun Exposure: Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun is a primary cause of pigmentation issues. UV rays stimulate melanocytes to produce more melanin as a protective response, leading to sunspots, freckles, and other forms of hyperpigmentation.
Hormonal Change: Melasma is a common pigmentation disorder that appears as dark, symmetrical patches on the face. It is triggered by hormonal changes, particularly during pregnancy, menopause, or while taking oral contraceptives.
Skin Inflammation: Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation occurs after an injury or inflammation to the skin, such as acne, eczema, or a cut. The skin produces excess melanin as it heals, resulting in dark spots or patches at the site of the injury.
Genetics: Some forms of pigmentation, such as freckles or certain birthmarks, are inherited and are more common in individuals with fair skin.
Aging: Age Spots, also know as liver spots, these small, dark areas on the skin typically develop in people over the age of 40. They are caused by cumulative sun exposure over the years and are most commonly found on areas frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, and arms.

Medications: Certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, antibiotics, and antimalarials, can cause pigmentation changes as a side effect. This can result in dark patches or a change in skin tone.

Medical Conditions: Vitiligo is a condition where the immune system attacks melanocytes, leading to loss of pigmentation in patches of skin, resulting in white spots or areas. And Addison’s Disease - a disorder of the adrenal glands that can cause hyperpigmentation, particularly in areas exposed to friction, like the elbows and knees.
